Case Studies
CASE 1 – Terry, aged 35
Terry had a medical condition affecting his heart through carrying excess weight. His doctors advised him to take up exercising and especially recommended swimming and walking to lose weight.
The sheer inconvenience of walking in all-weather conditions, whilst wearing glasses, made him approach us. He was also swimming twice a day and wanted to be completely free of prescriptive glasses permanently. He wanted both eyes operated on at the same time.
Infection
Terry was given a thorough eye and lifestyle assessment. He was found to be moderately myopic and thus suitable for L.A.S.E.K. surgery. This would allow both eyes to be dealt with together.
The surgical procedure went smoothly for the patient. Afterwards, special ‘bandage’ contact lenses were placed over both eyes. Terry was asked to return in 5 days to have them removed by the ophthalmic surgeon. Terry said, “I missed my swimming routine but, boy, was it worth waiting for! The clarity of vision is breathtaking. It goes to show how much we take our sight for granted. Fantastic service!”
Terry was advised that he could not go swimming for approximately
4 weeks after surgery. This was to prevent infection of the eyes.
CASE 2 – Sophie, aged 22
Sophie is a ‘new wave’ violinist, performing as a solo artiste touring with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Her new record company recommended that she ‘spiced up’ her image by first getting rid of her glasses.
Sophie needed a quick recovery with the best obtainable vision. She underwent a thorough eye examination and assessment. She was found to have a moderate level of astigmatism in one eye and a relatively low level of myopia in the other. She was still suitable for the L.A.S.I.K. procedure.
Speedy
The surgical procedure was successful. Sophie had protective contact lenses inserted to encourage rapid healing. She had them removed about 4 days later. Her post-op examination showed the epithelium cells healing rapidly. Shortly afterwards, Sophie embarked on her tour with no after-effects.
Sophie said, “I admit I was apprehensive about the surgery. I needn’t have worried because everything went smoothly. With each passing day, my vision gets clearer and clearer. I’m so pleased with it.”
This type of surgery was also to her advantage because healing was speedy with very little discomfort and after-effects.
CASE 3 – Tara, aged 33
Tara owns a dog grooming salon in which she also
works. She was wearing contact lenses but found that the amount
of dog hair and dust flying around inside the salon irritated her
eyes. She even developed eye infections sometimes as a result. She
felt it would be better for her eye health not to wear any sort
of prescriptive lenses.
Big difference
She was diagnosed with astigmatism and myopia (short-sight) in both
eyes and recommended for L.A.S.I.K. treatment. She decided to do
one eye at a time. The fact that she had to run her own business
was a factor taken into consideration. She was advised to wear protective
glasses for a period until the eye was completely healed. In fact,
it would be better to continue wearing them as protection against
skin dust, etc. while working.
Tara said, “Having this treatment has made a big difference to
me. There was a point when I feared I would have to sell the business
because of the dust and hair clippings.”
CASE 4 – Alan, aged 39
Alan is a long-distance road haulage driver who
came to us for corrective refractive surgery. He no longer wanted
to wear contact lenses for myopia (short-sight). He couldn’t afford
to take extra time off and needed surgery on both eyes at the same
time.
Pre-programmed
Alan was diagnosed with myopia and rather thin corneas in both eyes.
This meant that he was unsuitable for L.A.S.I.K. but suitable
for L.A.S.E.K. An incision was made and a mild alcohol solution
applied directly onto the corneal surface of the eye, then washed
away. The outer corneal layer of epithelial cells was peeled back.
The pre-programmed laser was applied to the stroma in the secondary
corneal layer.
Rigmarole
After treatment, Alan was prescribed special protective lenses which
were later removed by our skilled optometrist.
Alan was delighted with the speedy recovery of both eyes and the
clarity of vision he now experienced. He said, “It’s been well worth
it. It didn’t take long for my sight to get back to normal. Now
when I want a nap in my cab I just pull over and close my eyes.
It’s great not having to go through the rigmarole of washing my
hands, rinsing the lens, etc.”
CASE 5 – Cathy, aged 55
Cathy has taken up sailing with her new partner. She found that wearing contact lenses was not quite compatible with sailing. She was diagnosed by our ophthalmologist as having presbyopia – an age-related condition.
Simply marvellous
Cathy has been wearing monovision contact lenses. She used one eye for reading close-up and the other eye for long distance vision. She admitted she found using the contact lenses in this way odd, at first, but quickly became accustomed to it. However, having taken up sailing, contact lenses were problematic at times.
Our specialist recommended L.A.S.I.K. laser surgery on her right eye only (monovision), leaving the left one for close-up work.
Cathy said, “I’m pleased to say that my eyes get better with each passing day. Not having to wear lenses while sailing is simply marvellous. My only regret is that I hadn’t done it sooner.”
